Shein operates a lawful marketplace. This guide sets out, in date order, what Shein’s own pages say about orders that differ from the listing, and what consumer authorities say beyond them. Shein UK pages were read on 17 October 2026 and are undated; each country’s Shein site has its own terms. General information, not legal advice.
Order day: capture the listing before paying
Shein UK’s terms say marketplace products are sold directly by the seller named on the product page and order summary, and that Shein is not a party to the purchase contract. The same terms say photographs are not contractual and that colour discrepancies “do not imply defect or lack of conformity”. Shein’s terms discuss colour variation, but those terms do not settle whether an item matches its description under applicable consumer law. Screenshot the photos, size, colour and material fields, price, seller name and summary page.
Card choice matters later. For England, Citizens Advice says Section 75 covers credit card purchases of more than £100 and up to £30,000 per item, chargeback covers debit cards, and Section 75 usually does not apply if the buyer did not buy directly from the trader. See also paying safely online.
Delivery days: the 45-day and 30-day reporting limits
Shein’s UK shipping page says one order can arrive in several packages. If a package has not arrived within the estimated time, it asks for contact within 45 days of payment; if tracking says delivered but nothing arrived, or items are missing or wrong, within 30 days of the tracking delivery date.
The terms also require the customer to check the order on arrival and report wrong items to Customer Service; for goods not conforming to the order, return costs fall on the seller, with a refund within 14 days of the goods coming back. These 45-day and 30-day figures are Shein’s platform reporting windows, not the expiry of statutory rights.
The first fortnight: the statutory 14 days
Within 14 days of receipt a statutory right of withdrawal applies to a consumer buying from a professional trader. The Refund page says the refund is made at the latest 14 days after Shein is told, may be held until the goods or proof of posting arrive, and includes shipping if the return is within this period. Shein states the first return on each order is free and later returns from the same order carry a £2.50 deduction.
Days 15 to 30: Shein’s own return window
From day 15 to day 30 a commercial policy applies: new condition with tags, no refund of shipping, and refunds made up to 10 to 15 days after receipt. Bodysuits, lingerie, jewellery, beauty and underwear, among others, can only be returned in the first 14 days. For a faulty or not-as-described item, the terms ask the customer to tell Customer Service within 30 days of receipt (another platform reporting window); if the problem is confirmed, the refund covers the item, delivery charges and reasonable return costs.
After day 30: faulty, damaged or wrong items
Shein’s return policy asks for contact within 90 days of the order date for faulty or damaged items; that is a platform reporting window, and its terms say legal rights are not affected. In England, Citizens Advice lists rights where goods are broken, unusable or not what was advertised, but not where the buyer knew of the fault. If Shein’s answer is unsatisfactory, see step 3 below before contacting the card provider.
Once the item is wrong: the steps, in sequence
- Photograph the item, labels and packaging, and keep the order and listing screenshots.
- Open Shein Customer Service from My Orders; the Return Policy and Refund page set out the steps. Put the complaint in writing.
- If fraud or exposed payment details are suspected, call the bank at once. For an ordinary order dispute, use Shein’s claim process first. The Shein pages read do not say how a card dispute affects a Shein claim, so ask Shein and the card provider before opening one, and note both sets of deadlines. Ask about chargeback; UK buyers can also ask whether Section 75 applies, following Citizens Advice’s card guide; PayPal disputes have a 180-day limit.
- Report to the authorities below.
- Use strong, unshared passwords on shopping and banking accounts. Never pay anyone offering to recover money.
Where each country’s consumer bodies fit in
United Kingdom. The Citizens Advice helpline for England and Wales is 0808 223 1133 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm), listed on GOV.UK. Misleading adverts go to the ASA; if fraud is suspected, Report Fraud (0300 123 2040) covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Police Scotland covers Scotland. Where to report a scam in the UK has more.
Ireland. Shein’s European site gives a 14-day right to withdraw and an email, [email protected], on its return page. The CCPC helpline is +353 (0)1 402 5555 (CCPC guidance); ECC Ireland handles businesses in another EU country, Iceland or Norway.
United States. Shein’s US page gives 30 days from delivery. The FTC’s billing-error process asks for a letter reaching the issuer within 60 days of the first bill with the error (for example, things not delivered as agreed), but for a quality problem it says to contact the seller first, so 60 days is not the clock for every quality complaint (FTC guide). Report to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and your state attorney general. See paying a scammer in the United States.
Canada. Shein’s Canadian page gives 30 days. The Competition Bureau takes complaints about false or misleading representations; provincial offices take complaints against a business; the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is 1-888-495-8501.
Australia. Shein’s Australian page gives 45 days. The ACCC does not resolve individual disputes; the state consumer protection agency helps with complaints. Report scams to Scamwatch.
The bottom line
Act in date order: report non-delivery within 45 days, wrong or missing items within 30 days of delivery and faulty goods within 90 days of the order. Those are Shein’s platform reporting windows, not the expiry of statutory rights; withdrawal for an unwanted item has its own 14 days. Keep everything in writing, and weigh the card route only after checking its effect on the Shein claim. See also online shopping and delivery scams.
